MY 1996 Golf GL 4 DR TEMPERATURE DIAL BROKEN

96 Golf GL 4dr middle dial temperature dial was stuck on cold forever, plus my heater core
is broken so we never needed to move it to hot, But someone forced it thinking it had a
heater and now it moves loosely and My AC is not cold its kindda warm/cold. how do I
move it into cold or how do I replace the dial. cuz we tried to move it manually & it won't,
we tried to pull the panel to the dials but the dials don't come loose. what to do plz?

The knob controls a cable that operates the blend door. The heater control can be removed by removing the four screws under the trim plate.
