Why did my 99 VW Beetle stop iddling, and no power breakes

My car was running fine, went in to pay a bill, came back out and car
wouldn't stay running, I also had and no-more power bakes. As soon as I
let go of the accelerator, the motor would die in a second or two. Had to
restart at each stop sign, and continually rev the motor to keep it running to
cripple home. Once the car started to it accelerated fine, but no power
brakes throughout my drive home.

Any one ever have this experience? What is my problem?

not sure why your car is dying when you stop but can tell you that when you let off the gas to stop the car the engine dies and when the engine dies the vacuum that controls your power brakes is cut off as well. no running engine no power brakes you should have also noticed that you lost power steering as well.all that will work when the engine is running properly again.. so no need to worry bout your brakes be concerned about why its dying i would suggest you take it to autozone or the like to have codes pulled this may lead you in a direction to figuring out why the engine dies

Thank VulgarOgre. Your response set me off to looking for a vacuum line leak. I found the problem, a hard-plastic-line had cracked and came undone from a major 'T'. I fixed it, and she she runs great again. Thanks so much for the response!
