My 2010 VW Passat occasionally will not go into reverse. I have to turn car off restart and then put into reverse and it is fine.

Sounds like your PRNDL switch is going bad - PRNDL is short for Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Low - probably best to have a professional replace that one

Is your car an automatic or manual transmission? If it is a manual, I would suspect the hydraulic clutch cylinder. Trouble with any other gear?

It could be the dog and transmission- that happened w ours. Codes didn't read that serious but inspection showed otherwise- fortunately it was covered by warranty otherwise $$$$$$ oh wait - lol ??! The warranty cost $$$$$$

DSG and trans---- dog was a typo

Love Vw's but not reliable will get a Honda if our Passat doesn't get covered w new issue( cutting off) through recall

And pertaining to dsg and trans prior to diagnosis it was driving fine engine light intermittent a little imagined hesitation and intermittent soft gear shift delay
