88 maxima overdrive button will not stay pushed in/on. light also off

Asked by manyamile Dec 09, 2013 at 06:20 PM about the 1988 Nissan Maxima

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the overdrive button on the shifter no longer stays pushed in. (the green light is also off.)
When i push  the button and hold it  in manually the car shifts into overdrive (5th?)  just fine. i've thought about just trying to tape the button 'in'. i do mostly flat and highway driving and without O/D the car just sounds like it is working too hard.
anyone know if this would be a simple repair, to get the 'button' to work again?
