My 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ is making a clicking noise when I drive????

Asked by Collette585 Nov 09, 2012 at 02:30 AM about the 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I took it to the garage and they said I need a new gasket.....then when they went to replace gasket they said
Manifold was cracked. But, there where no fumes or fluid leaks in car? Wouldn't I have noticed fumes or fluids
leaking.....and if a manifold, is that the intake?

Gaskets click now? Manifold could refer to quite a few things.

And no you may not have noticed anything but for a manifold whether exhaust or intake to be cracked and noticeable by looking at it, the engine would at the very least be either loud or run funny at lower rpms.

cracked intake manifold would whistle as a vacuum leak, cracked exhaust manifold would be a very loud exhaust noise...

They have already taken ithe engine apart and said the manifold was warped on the right side. The have had the car for over 5 days and can't find parts so they said they ordered oversized gaskets for it??????

Depends on which manifold they were talking about. I believe the intake manifold carries the fuel to the cylinders. The exhaust manifold are the pipes that are attached to the sides of the engine. I had to get my exhaust manifold gaskets changed cuz my engine was making loud noise the more I accelerated. I never noticed any fumes etc. Maybe the intake manifold problem you would smell fumes being it carries the fuel.

PS: My exhaust manifold gasket I had replaced was on my 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ. I have same car but it's nocturne metallic blue with light blue 1/2 vinyl roof. :)
