Grinding when placing into 5th gear on 2008 jeep patriot 5 speed manual with 80,000 km.

It doesn't happen every time I change gears but when it does the noise is sickening.
What can be the cause of this? A mechanic said it was the clutch but it seems too soon
for a clutch and why no effect on other gears? Another forum suggested the syncromesh
could be worn. How can I figure out which it is with out paying for expensive repairs?

replacing the synchronizer will be expensive and you will have the transmission out. go ahead and replace the clutch at this time. has the fluid level been checked ?
The transmission oil was just topped up and the clutch line bleed and refilled. Its $750 for the new clutch parts and $500 for new synchronizer for 3rd, 4th and 5th. Jeep recomends replacing all 3 at the same time, so I'm pretty keen to only replace what is actually faulty. It seems to me that 80,000km is pretty low for this type of problem. If it was just the synchronizer for 5th that is gone would double clutching solve the problem?
yes, thats early failure. i don't know your driving habits but this is early failure for synchro's and the clutch. $500 to replace the synchro's is reasonable but an additional $750 to do the clutch job is high. i would shop these prices around. a patch job on a jeep you plan to keep could come back to bite you in your posterior.
