Look at the tranny pan. If it is a square it is a Turbo 350 .. if it is a square with one corner cut off it is a Turbo 400. More than likely it is a 350, being a 350 engine. The 400s were reserved for higher HP engines.
Yeah also the kickdown on a turbo 400 is electronic, so it has a plug in on the driver side(little fittin tapped into the side with a flat prong on the end a wire plug hooks to), the turbo 350 has a cable style kickdown, which hooks into the passenger side or the tranny(cable the bolts on). Most likely you have a turbo 350.

re: "O K, I have an '72 Olds., what trans. do I got?" Close, not exactly right. Forget about looking at bolts and pans, you have to get on the ground to do that(besides the TurboHyrdamatic 350 is square WITH the corner cut off, 13 bolts), What if someone changed stuff along the line, 37 years is a while. What if someone took the TH350 out of you're car that may of been put behind that 350, or maybe its a TurboHydramatic 400(or 375). If the vacuum modulator that connects to that 1/8" stainless steel tube (attached to the bellhousing[passenger-side]routed behind,up,and on top of), the motor and connects to a small rubber vacuum hose is at the rear of the trans. facing toward the back of the car, its probably a TH350, if its at the front of the trans. facing out its most likely a TH400. But thats not going to tell you if you have a TH200(metric), or a TH375. The TH375 looks like a TH400 except it has a TH350 sized output shaft/driveshaft yoke, Olds. used it on Delta 88's and Vista Cruisers with Olds. 350 engines, its kind of a light-duty TH400. The TH200 usually has the word "metric" on the pan, I can't imagine why someone would put one of those in there as they are generraly regarded as "junk", and were usually replaced with TH350's. There is also(usually) a small metal tag attached to the trans. body(passenger side), its got manufacture build info. and application. Alot of the times if the trans was rebuilt this tag was removed, I guess because ut was generally considered that Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac(BOP), were interchangeable through the years.
