Why would my rpms run real high only when driveing

Transmission / clutch slipping. If it is a 4X4 maybe it is low range.
It's an automatic trans
It idles fine and seems to be shifting fine just screams when u get on gas
Bob is right, but does it sound like it's really running that fast..or maybe tachometer is faulty? I looked at a forum and they say 6k is red-line. Going to red-line to shift is fine but cruising with it running that fast is not good
I type so slow your guy's posts were not there I was off looking for what red-line is on that truck
It definitely not a faulty tach it's running high as I said it automatic trans not sure if that makes a difference
Is it a 4 wheel drive? If so it may be stuck in low range.
It's not 4x4 beginning to think trans is just about shot not sure how one can go so quick one day running fine next day bam lol
Please don't run your engine like that long. Sounds like the trans is toast. It could be stuck in 1st gear which could indicate a tps or vss problem
Ya I thought maybe tps too I'm not sure what vss stands for but at this point think best thing to do is let my mechanic take a look
Thanks bob and rest u guys ur suggestions gave some good place to start looking but nothing I checked or changed worked I'm good at fixing things but am no mechanic
i am having the same issue today 4/16/18... this was helpful info..
Mine started doing this today. Checked trans oil it was barely low. It did it for awhile longer after I left the store where I purchased the transmission fluid. Then it started running normal but I am thinking maybe it's a sensor also
I have an 06 chevy 2500 hd crew cab and the rpms are running under 1500 when going 50 mph or lower
I'm having that problem but my truck runs fine except for the rpm sticking on 6 rpm it goes down when I turn off and on the truck repeatedly, any suggestions
