Brakes on my 1998 Rover

Asked by squatch Feb 23, 2014 at 12:14 PM about the Land Rover Range Rover

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My brake red warning light started coming on, and off. Eventually on at all times.. I noticed only the front brakes (got hot) seemed to work after light came on.

My regular mechanic determined it to be the master cylinder. I bought a used master cyl. After the mechanic installed the cylinder. He still had same issue. he thinks the used one I bought was a bad one also. He says there is no fluid out either rear brake line to the brake cylinders. I'm $500. into attempted repairs.  Any suggestions ?

Thanks!  Tom.

loosen the fittings at cylinder a little and press brake to see fluid spray under pressure, also the push rod must retract enough to gulp fluid in both port holes in reservoir. go from their. No fluid to rear? Line seldom plugs, but hoses will at wheel cylinder. again loosen line and see pressure

Hi 7jimmy7 I hope my mech. knows enough to do that (?) I do that when I get it home though. He says it has separate lines to each wheel. He had his pr. bleeder on it. Dang cylinder looks like a space shuttle hyd. cyl., LOL! NOTE: I think I read where the cyl. will shut down to one set of wheels in a failure situation. I have not checked, but I was told a new replacement mstr. cyl. runs $1400.00 __ So you'll get a good laugh here, I just went out and bought another Rover for $2500 that I know the brakes work on. I think my other one will turn out to be a parts truck. They are nice vehicles though. Wish I could afford a new one $40,K up, mostly up! Thanks though, I'll double check your suggestion. Tom
