My car normally idols at around 800 RPMs but it will randomly jump up to 1500 RPMS when im either standing still or at a stop light. what would cause this?

could be a number of possibilities the most common is a vacuum leak the other possibilities are iac solenoid throttle positioning sensor or mass air flow meter the three former will typically throw a check engine light but on occassion have not until the damage is done to the sensor or solenoid the best bet is to find a shop or if you are lucky enough to have a friend who can read the values on these sensors that would be your best bet
Hi Chris, try a fuel system cleaning. Sometimes moisture can impede the mass airflow sensor. fuel system service should be done every 24000 kms. or 18000 miles
