Typically you should have a gallon or two left when the low fuel light comes on. Don't run it out of gas as you may ruin your fuel pump. If you fill the car up when the light comes on, compare that number to the fuel tank capacity which is in your owners manual.

If you toggle the dash display to show Cruising Range you will find the Low Fuel warning light comes on when the range based on remaining fuel hits 23 or 24 miles. This is a slight underestimate, as you will find if you compare fillup with fuel capacity, as suggested by the previous respondent.
