2000 S Model Jaguar - Cause for Oil Pan to crack and Engine freeze or lock?
Asked by maggie1938 Jan 13, 2014 at 10:58 PM about the Jaguar S-TYPE
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Took car in to local shop after computer diagnosis for spark plugs, coil and intake manifold. Repair was done. Mechanics ran car a bit and later they said they heard a noise and engine locked (could not restart). Hoisted up again and oil was pouring out as oil pan had cracked. they felt piston had went thru engine. Had to have car towed and also they demanded payment for above repairs. Am I a problem or did they do something wrong?

...well they disassembled it...standard labor rate...but what are they doin' with the pieces?....are they going to rebuild your engine? Is this what they're gonna do? piece it back?~....here's a used one for $695~ http://www.ebay.com/itm/JAGUAR-S-TYPE-ENGINE-V6-3-0-COMPLETE- 2000-2001-2002-/320959766808? pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A2000%7CMake %3AJaguar&hash=item4abab16118&vxp=mtr

the only thing you may have done in error was ignore the knockin'....this was caused by overheating (you'd have a light) or no oil pressure (you'd have a light) so ya...it's your fault for ignoring the warning lights...gulp~
who's diagnosis? obviously it had been running very rough, suggesting plugs, coil and intake, covers all common possibles , why not just plugs,or just coil, so they cover all what's most likely poor diagnostics! the real problem may have been valve train and it blue, to throw a rod that engine had to be turning 3000 rpm or more, it defiantly wasn't just sitting their running at idle and a rod gos thrue the pan. that about puts it in junk category , of coarse to avoid fault they demand payment. I would have held up on paying as an engine ready to blow is obvious and a good mechanic should have turned the job down .
If the engine was knocking when they went to troubleshoot it and they went ahead and did a tune-up on it they were asking for trouble. WAS there a knocking noise when you took it to them? If so, tell them you are not paying and talk to a lawyer as you may have a suit for faulty workmanship!
