Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck is 83 f250 4x4 460.when
I bought it I knew the ignition
switch and steering column
needed replaced. So I drove it
around till one day it stalled with
ignition switch froze where it was
had it towed to a local
garage.where they had it a month
and it's been a nite mare. Had to
have it towed home because it
won't start. They put a steering
column that none of the wires
match up. I found a tag ran the
numbers says it's 84 Econoline
3speed manual.i unplugged
harness then my dome light
ßtarted working again.ill just say
this everything but turn signals
and Hazzard worked in truck .now
Hazzard and headlight and brake
light  work no parking no gages,no
starting unless it was jumped then
it would die quick they flattened
my fuel lines why idk they put
another fuel pump in without my
consent. It was not starving for
fuel before they got my truck I just
the other day cut out the squished
line and no more fuel
problem.what I need to know if
that steering column can stay if I
buy the right wiring harness for
ignition and turn signals? And
other colum for ford e van.i have
83 f250 4x4 460auto. ? What can I
do to get my truck back n the

This is a classic case of the so called shop not knowing what they were doing! Most likely all you needed was a new ignition switch to begin with! My advice is to get the original steering column back, if you can, and take it somewhere else who knows what they're doing! If you can't get the original column back you're going to have to hunt down the correct one on Ebay or your local junkyard. You can also search carpart.com too. The bad part about all this is it's going to cost way more than it should have and a reputable shop isn't going to like fixing someone else's botch job! Good luck to you! Hope that helps! Jim

That’s horrible, but I agree with the above. Back then I rarely had to replace steering columns unless they were damaged by thieves. Ignition switch and turn signal switches were very common replacements and were fairly straight forward, even the bearings were easy compared to todays vehicles. If the column you have now is mounted properly and fits the steering gear box you maybe able to use it by just replacing the turn signal switch and ignition switch with the correct year and transmission of the vehicle. Good luck
