I had the same problem(key not going back to lock position) There is a plastic gear in the column that has a small tab on the inside of it.This tab most likely broke off and is getting jammed in the gear.I had to take mine to a steering column shop for the repair. It cost me $150.00 and the problem is solved. If you look right under the ignition on the bottom of the column, you'll see a little cap, remove it and with a small screwdriver or a nail fell around for the release that will bring the key back and lock the steering.Hope this helps.
