Why is my transmission not delivering any drive power? The RPMs just race.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The transmission on 1999 Volvo xc70 does not engage after it’s warmed up. It delivers no drive power whatsoever in any gear, including reverse. I shut the car down, wait 5 minutes and I can drive it again, but only a very short distance (few hundred feet) before it disengages again.  The colder the weather the longer it takes for this problem to appear.

The fluid is not clean red, but more brownish. Is solenoid external or does transmission need to be dropped to get to it.
