Chevrolet Haulted production of the Camaro?

Asked by homer4555 Feb 16, 2008 at 10:31 AM about the Chevrolet Camaro

Question type: General

My question is....Why did Chevrolet hault production of the Camaro in 2002 only to resume in late 2008-2009?  Did designers take a 7 year vacation, or did they feel that the Camaros' design had become bland in the early 2000's and decide to go back the drawing board?  All while Chevrolet is coming up with modern retro ideas for their concept car, Ford and Dodge dominate the market with the release of the new Mustang and Charger.  Dodge soon plans to present the new Challenger, and who knows what to expect from Ford.  Chevrolet has been making slight changes to the Corvette over the years and Chevy fans know they look forward to the same style, performance, and reliability to accompany the Camaro upon its release.  I myself am a die hard Chevy fanatic, and my feelings are that the Camaro is as much as an American Tradition as the Corvette and it has been in production for over 60 years without missing a beat, So why did Chevrolet stop production?

They "killed" the Camaro/Firebird in 2002 because of very poor sales. The cars were not to return. The poor sales were a combo of poor marketing, and poor design (some say that). I belong to a F-body group (f-body is the Camaro/firebird) and there is a large demand for the last gen' design. With the new CAFE standards ALL of these cars have there days numbered (35mpg per car min), well in the US at least, not here in Canada (yet). As a busness you would not do something that costs you a ton of money, in the end that is what happened to the F-body. This site also has some more info : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camaro It was a sad day when they killed the F-body, in 2004 a designer drew up some "retro" Camaro concepts and they caught the eye of a "big-wig" at GM. And from there they made a "concept" that took the autoworld by storm, there was so much positive feedback they "greenlighted" the design, But there was a little hesitation (RE: Chev SSR, GTO, there was alot of demand but very little sales). Hopefully GM can sell enough of these to keep it in production. Check out the link I posted above it will fill in all missing info. Best of luck.
