New 5.7ltr engine with 300 hp and no "get up and go".

Asked by degrene2 Apr 21, 2014 at 04:15 PM about the Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had a new (not rebuilt) 5.7 engine installed in my 98 Chev PU.  Runs fine, starts first go.
New distributor w/plugs and new wires.  All bought from Summitt.  The truck just doesn't
have any speed from the start.  Any ideas?

is the computer tuned for the aftermarket motor? That engine factory produced 250ish hp. Did you build it or was it a crate engine. Also is the cam computer safe? If it is to extreme it wont produce the vacuum needed by the computer to make it operate properly.

The timing offset might need to be checked.. or u might not have one cylinder working which can be tricky to detect on a v8 if u dont know what it sounds like, the motor will shake while idling. Its easy to confuse a plug wire - although u say it fires/idles well.. just something to check in case. If the timing was not set close enough it might be u have to do the offset with a special tool. I was lucky and got it right on when doing a friends car 2 months ago, also non rebuilt swap - works fine.
