I had my new to me 1969 dodge chinook towed for 20 miles, they unhooked the drive shaft and now when I move the chinook my reverse gear makes a growly grindy noise it did not make before? why?

Asked by berthabites Jul 30, 2017 at 03:32 AM about the Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

If the drive shaft linkage can be adjusted, do I need a special tool to adjust  it and/OR good hand or upper body strength. Also there was a 8 in spot of oil or grease in the drive about where the drive shaft reattached and the tow truck driver seemed like he might have been snockered. Would it still drive if the drive line was attached incorrectly? Do I need to grease it?

without the shaft the lubricant will leak out of the tranny. that's normal , there's not much to it, it slides in and you bolt up the universals , check the drum brakes for looseness making the reverse noise

Check to make sure the drive-line is properly installed and also do as suggested above, check the transmission fluid level.

was the drive shaft out the entire time or did the drunk driver do it half way after he started hearing a noise ?

That wouldn't be good. Had it been me and I discovered a drunk tow truck driver, the Highway Patrol would have been immediately involved.

Hey you got one?I have a 1969 Chinook Mobel Lodge.Would you like to have it?Body in good shape interior not so good due to skylight damage.I hate to just junk it.The 318 and running gear is worth something?
