2016 Ram 3500 dually . Right rear tires lock up .

Asked by GuruCWLPM Feb 09, 2019 at 05:23 PM about the Dodge RAM 3500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Two times now my right rear wheels have locked up on me right after shifting
from park into drive . The truck starts to take off normal but only goes about ten
feet and the right rear wheels lock up . after putting it into reverse or park and
then shifting back into drive it then takes off normal . This issue has happened
twice now in the last 3 days . any ideas on this would be appreciated .

Either the brake caliper is sticking, the e brake is sticking or an axle bearing. A letter bearing would have a growling noise going down the road. I would be suspect of the brakes. Do you normally set the parking brake?

Does yours have the electric brake assist controller for a trailer/towing? (I would expect a 3500 dually to have one.) You might have an issue with the controller module. Otherwise you might be dealing with contaminated fluid, but your vehicle seems to new for that issue, unless you have a lot of miles on it.

I have never used the parking brake . I would think that the built in electric brake controller would only affect trailer brakes . This issue is happening when I'm not towing . It acts like the vehicle was put into park while it's rolling . The vehicle is barely moving when it happens . Like 1 mile per hour . It completely locks up and the vehicle won't move until it is shifted out of drive and then back into drive . Then it will take off and roll free .

Ya electric brAkes are for controlling trailer brakes. So, it's not the parking brake sticking. Shifting from drive to reverse and back wouldn't free up a stuck caliper....seems to be a drivetrain issue. Could be in the rear end or the transfer case. Beware of an axle bearing, I was working on an F350 years ago, guy said wheel would lock up occasionally, took it for a test drive and it locked up going 40 MPH, scared the crap outta me and ended up being an axle beading
