Usually sparks, smoke just before the battery cables start to melt and catch fire. Now if it went open then nothing will happen, not even a click.

A multi tester is useful for electrical problems , If you're going to do your own work there are certain tools you should have .
And, oh by the way, if it is not shorted to ground, the starter will just not work.
