this isn't an easy answer to give as there are many variables to consider. what is the truck going to used for, does your teen want to 4x4, what power are you looking for, how proficient are you at working on a late model vehicle? if it just to noodle around town, I would suggest a 2x shortbox, either a 5.2 (if the truck is pre 2000) or the 5.7 hemi if you are looking for big power. maybe give us more info so we can give you a better answer.

something to haul a dirt bike but still be good on gas for going to school every day.

You then want a 98--2001 ram single cab, 318, decent on gas, but still can haul a trailer, parts are real cheap, (for the dog just ran out on the street story), and checp on the insurance, there are plenty of them out there

Go to fastenal.com website and look for their used fleet truck sales. You can pick up one to two year old dodge rams for around 13-14K with only between 30-40K miles on them. The best deal around for sure.
