why is the payload and max trailer weight lower on a ram 1500 4wd than on the ram 1500 2 wd?

Question type: General

I'm in the market for a ram 1500. Was thinking 4wd since two or three a
month I tow a trailer ( trailer weight and tractor plus implements equals 6600).
Usually a distance of less than 15-20 miles, never over 40 miles.I figured the
4wd would be a little "beefier" and handle more weight better , but was
surprised when I saw the charts showed the 2wd had a little heavier payload
and max trailer weight. Was wondering why? Is there any advantage to me
getting the 4wd for towing other than the obvious of getting a start in some
sandy or muddy sites

Also, now that you the my towing weight and distance and frequency, do you think the 3.21gear would suffice for me or would be better advised to get the 3.92. Any advice on for 2wd verses 4wd or gear ratio suggestions would be appreciated. I don't won't to buy bigger than I need and sacrifice fuel efficiency but I don't want to go to small either for sure

For light duty towing like you do I would not be too concerned about the rear axle ratio unless you have steep hills to climb. Just lock out overdrive. The reason why the 2wd is rated more than the 4wd is probably because the 2wd is lighter and can therefore take a little more load. I personally would go with the 4x4 because tractor work often means unloading in loose soil areas.

I would recommend installing a deep transmission pan and maybe a heavy duty transmission cooler to keep the transmission alive.
