Stabilitrak/ traction control

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2015 Silverado. Recently I had the “service
stabilitrak” message on the dash. At first it would come on
and my truck would “flicker”. What I mean by that is that
when the message came up he truck would kind of shut
off and come right back on(Kind of like when an alternator
or a battery goes bad and you have to reprogram your
radio stations. I’m sure many of you have dealt with this
part) Last week I was trying to parallel park and the
message popped up again only this time I felt it different
because I noticed the truck would “flicker” when I turned
the steering wheel to either left or right.(took me forever to
park btw because the truck kept flickering so much but
anywaaaays..)While I was still trying to park the tc
(traction control) light came up on my dash. I figured if I
switched the truck to 4wd the tc light and the stabilitrak
message would go away (idk why I thought like that but I
did) so I put my truck in 4wd and parked it. Now I have
another problem because the truck is stuck on 4wd!???
What I want to know is if I have more than one problem
goin on here or if it might be one of those things where a
fuse or a module or something of that sort could be
causing this. I tried being as detailed as possible in this
post so hopefully it’s not hard to understand my problem
and you guys may be able to help me out. Thanks in
advance!! Ps all these electric parts on vehicles that used
to be manual are convenient but a FREAKING HASSLE!
(Convenience comes at a cost)

My 2016 GMC Sierra is doing exactly the same thing. Turning steering wheel sharp, like in a fast food drive thru it flickers, stabiltrac light comes on. Motor wires and then immediately comes back on. Just curious did you get your problem corrected and what was it if you did. Thanks

I was having the same problem with my 2013 Malibu. It ended up being the battery. Now the Service Stabilitrak System light is coming on.

My light just came on last night with the engine light as well and reduced power to engine warning. My 2010 suburban would not accelerate and was very sluggish. This morning I found this video and will be trying it before taking it to a shop. This gentleman believes it is a grounding issue. I hope it is this easy to fix the problem. https://youtu.be/QE2EfA_DHCs Hope this helps some of you.

What did you end up finding as your solution? I'm experiencing the same things your saying on a 2015 suburban.... The only addition to mine was it then flashed parking assist active and starting turning my wheel when I didn't want it to.

My 2011 Camaro SS came up with this on the display. Turned out that combustion gas was blowing past the electrode on the #6 spark plug, and dislodging the plug-wire boot enough to break contact with the plug. Not apparent on quick visual inspection. Veteran mechanic with diagnostic scope located it. Reason why others are probably experiencing this when performing particular driving maneuvers is that the inertial forces are probably causing the already partially dislodged plug-boot to shift, and break contact with the plug. When the PCM detectes an engine misfire, it starts shutting down other systems it controls. Including good ol' Stabilitrak. Re-seat your spark-plug wires when this happens. Better yet, replace the plugs and the wires.

2015 Silverado same issue. First started with slow speed turns, "Service Stabilatrak" power steering would stop working. Took it to the dealer, said it was a bad ECM. Three month's later, happened again coinciding with a second recall from GM which included my truck for Electric power steering assist . They updated the software. Less than two weeks later the "Service Stabilatrak" comes on either randomly or when using the turn signal and radio resets, random stall at low speeds. Anyone have this issue resolved? I'm thinking lemon law.

I dont have an answer I wish I did. What is GM going to do wait until someone is killed before anything is done. Stabilatrak seems to be a common problem.

Do not take Stabiltrac needs Servicing light on lightly...our light came on 2011 Chev Duramax LT with 87,000 K and within 5 minutes we lost our steering and crashed pulling a fifth wheel. If this post can save anyone else’s life ....hoping it will, pull over

The cause is in the stabilitrak sensor in your wheel hub. Replace them or just have it checked with an ob reader.

Start by checking the speed sensors in each hub, they'll most likely need to be replaced as a whole. If you take it to a dealership, will be over $900. The part is around $20 for just the sensor or around $160 per hub. If you know how to work on cars. You're better off doing it

2016 Chevy Silverado z71...had recall done and still having issues. Dealer told us it's the fuse box on the battery, corrosion and rust due to moisture. Of course not a warranty covered item with bumper to bumper. Made it seem like our fault, said their is a ground out hole in the top of the box that allowed moisture in. Gonna run $600.

got a 2006 trailblazer. the stabilitrac lights came on. So of course I looked it up and it said it was safe to drive so i went back home immediately. As I was backing up into the parking space, I heard (and so did others standing around) a HUGE metal thump! WTH was that?!?! The truck has stayed parked since (2 days now) and i am terrifed to even drive it to the mechanics who is less than a mile away. someone tell me I am not screwed completely and now have a truck that will never be drivable again. I cant afford 600 or 1000 on a truck i am still making payments on! Jeez, the 1000 would wipe out my entire monthly income (disability).

2012 3500, I replaced the Steering Wheel Position Sensor, message "Service StabiliSux and Service Traction Control" still popping up on start. Park Assist comes on the screen too stating "disabled" at every start, even if I turn it on after starting. The doors do not auto unlock when putting into park and you know that little digital dash underneath each letter that tells you which gear you are in, that is no longer there. Have not put any mileage on this other than to drive it around the neighborhood once a week to keep it in use. This just started happening. I've pulled the battery cables, I've looked at all the grounds, tested with volt meter, no codes at all on the diagnostic tool. What is this?

This literally happened to me today. My car is currently at the dealership to be looked at in the morning. I went into the store and 30 minutes later when I came back out the screen on my dash said service stabilitrak, service traction control, and service park assist. When I put it in drive thinking it was nothing, I had next to no power when my gas pedal was on the floor. The RPM gauge was barely moving. I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze with 45,000 miles on it.

Theres a video on YouTube that talks about a g218 ground problem with high resistance. Look into that. That ground Wire is located on top Of driver side dash behind speaker on windshield area. It’s for 2014 silverados. Not sure if other Gm vehicles would relate but it’s worth a try. My truck just started lighting up with this message so I’m looking into this soon. And I will post to see if it solve my issue.

After 3 weeks troubleshooting cleaning all 3 negative terminals (battery, engine and chassis) seems to have removed that gremlin. Plus, no more oil consumption. Who'd of figured that one. 3 months, no repeats.

Same story! I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado. Service Stabilitrak light came on for a second Followed by all electrical components turning off....including the engine. I was turning a sharp right into a parking space when it occurred. I waited a few moments before I restarted the truck. I had my wife and 7- week old on the truck. What kind of money are we looking at for repair?

Ok, so I dropped my truck off at a Chevy dealership in North Carolina. They gave me a car to use while they diagnosed the issue. 3 days went by with little information. The service rep called and stated the tech was “unable to replicate the issue” with my vehicle. However, the fuse box was loose under the hood and the tech stated it could cause several issues. $600 dollars for the fuse box replacement.

Having the same issue with my 2014 silverado. the stabilitrak warning pops up, the the radio goes off, the lights flicker, the doors lock/unlock, and once the windows even rolled down. I removed the excess insulation from around G218 like mentioned earlier, but it didnt help. i took it to a deal and they found no issues at all and couldnt get it to happen again. it doesnt happen every time we drive it, but it starting to become more and more often. it may happen a few days in a row and it may go a week or three before it happens, but now the truck is starting to die when this happens. its very dangerous and someone needs to figure it out. any help would be appreciated!

I have a 2016 Sierra 1500 2WD, my first issue with this Stabilitrak problem started a couple months ago after not driving the truck for about 2 weeks. I had left my old cell phone plugged into the charger, use it for music. Despite being in the truck for those 2 weeks and not used, the phone had a full charge so I immediately thought the truck wouldn't start but it did. Once I got to where I was going though, the Stabilitrak light started flashing, steering wheel locked up & the truck would shut off when I put it in reverse. I took it to a local mech who looked it over and could not duplicate & only told me to bring it back if it did it again. Well today, 2 months later it did it again & it did it because I plugged that same cell phone back into the charger, I hadn't done it since that day a couple months prior but I wanted to see if it would do it again & about 15 or so minutes after plugging my phone into the trucks charge socket it started flashing the Service Stabilitrak light again and shutting off this time while I was in the drive through at a Fast Food Restaurant. Now I am sure it's an issue with either the battery, battery cables or the alternator is bad. I will find out tomorrow at my buddies house because he has a side biz working on cars has diagnostic equipment. Reading all these other stories though it seems like this Stabilitrak issue is a major problem GM wide, if me and my buddy get it figured I am going to trade this truck in for a Tacoma before anything else can go wrong I swear I have almost never had a decent experience with American cars have had Chevy & Fords and had problems with them all...

I had so many things replaced to troubleshoot this issue. Initially, it was the ignition wiring, then spark plugs, coils, oxygen sensors and faulty control module. Additionally, the throttle body was cleaned and STILL the issue returned. It wasn't until someone else came in and the correct error code displayed that he realized it was the FUSE BOX. I have not had an issue in almost 3 months now after replacing the fuse box. The mechanic told me 4-5 more cars came in with this issue since mine and all of them have avoided the extra spending with this fix.
