1996 Econo Van starts but wont go into drive or reverse

We drove the van to a camping spot, started van and now it wont go into drive or reverse

It sounds like maybe the linkage came off/apart. You should be able to see the gear selector under the van on the side of the transmission. I would have someone...with the parking brake set, foot on the brake and engine off and wheels chocked in front and behind them so it can't roll...move the gear selector and see if it is moving at the trans.
