That is geared pretty low but with the limited engine power available back then they need low gears to get a decent level of performacne. I would look for a tag on the differential and then pick a gear that suits your needs. I looked up the specs for 1978 Vettes and the standard gear ration was 3.36 which matches the information you gave. A 2.73 might be what you want OR you could install an OD transmission such as a 4 speed auto or a 5 speed manual.
