on my 1994 Ford Explorer, the check engine light stays on all the time

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I took my explorer to a mechanic last year because the check engine light came
on and stayed on, now its doing it again. I need to smog my truck but I can't do
it with the check engine light on. I've checked all the wiring and hose's but can't
find anything.

What did the mechanic do last year? What code do u have on your car?
If u don't have a scan tool, then please go to AutoZone and they will check error codes for free and give u a printout

775 thanks for the input. I bought a scan tool today, unfortunately when I went to the same mechanic yesterday and asked him about what he did last year of course this year he's in a different state of mind, he insists I let him do the scan at his shop:) for $85., I said that's ok I think I got this one covered. So I went to Auto-zone and bought my own OBD 1 tool. Yeah another tool to add to my arsenal.
yikes $85 is high for a shop.....there in Chicago they charge $75. I usually rent the Scan tool...yes, u buy it and then return it within so many days....at AutoZone. Its always available
Tell me what u find, I am interested to hear

Bought the code reader tested the truck got a 522 on the reader in the book it says 522 is the neutral safety switch. Because my truck is a standard trani auto zone says says it's the clutch safety switch. Bought the part installed it, ran the test again got the same code?? Help, please.
okay ...code 522 reads as this: 522 pops up if u don't have the clutch pedal down to the floor
run the test with the clutch down

Ok, replaced the part needed, (mass air flow) Ran the test again, got a pass code YEAY. got up this morning decided to do the full test "koeo, koer..." before I could start the truck, I got a 186code i.e. fuel injector switch fault code. Grr.. so now what ugh.
I found a good discussion on your problem. Look at the answer dated Sept 2002. It gives a step by step check list for you. Sorry I am on a trip to TX now https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/25743-94-explorer-4-0l-rough-idle-error-codes-181-186-189-a.html

Cool site thanks for sending me in that direction, unfortunately I was unable to get direct answers. Maybe I am just not as mechanically inclined as I should be or wish I was, lol.

Thanks Dariusk, even though I wasn't able to get the info I thought I needed, I decided to go it alone. I guess I am mechanically inclined :) After I replaced the air flow sensor I noticed the plastic cover for the air filter was cracked, also the air flow tubing was pretty beat up, plus a few other smaller things needed taken care of so I got my hind busy and took care of business. Got it all finished up today, My truck is running like a top. Again thanks for all the assistance, you gave me the push I needed to do it.
Glad it is working so well! Congratulations!! I can just imagine the satisfaction you feel! What a great feeling!
