not good... i would have expected more from a SS rated car from chevy... but ive had lots try to beat me but they all suffer from an asmatic engine and poor gearing...

yea, the figures given shows a naturally aspirated V6. Unfortunately, I think the SS was for apperance purpose, though I agree I would expect more too. Like supercharged V6 or an LS4 V8.

i think they basicaslly decided to build the nascar body to a certain aero spec and therefore had to build a street car to a similar spec... they did well with the race car but they could have paid a little homage to the monte carlos of the past...

In this period the SS was in fact little more than a trim package. While it did have a 20HP boost from the LS model at 180HP it was still nothing to rave about. At the time I always wondered why they didn't put in the 240HP supercharged V6 that was commonly found in the sportier Pontiac models. What you noted is actually in fact true, in order to meet NASCAR specifications the production car had to have an equivalent shape, henceforth it was commonly known at GM that the production Monte Carlo was only produced to continue Chevy's NASCAR efforts which had much greater marketing results and kept the Monte Carlo name alive.

yeah i figured as much... it kinda makes sense because it is a good nascar aero shape and it did quite well aerodynamically... but its really a shame... didnt you use to be able to order monte carlos of old with 454s in them/??? thats what im talking about... they shoulda made it at least 275hp just to make it a little more linked to thier nascar project anyways... give the fans something that actually says hey i drive a race bread car... anyways yeah its too bad they didnt make something punchier...

Yeah, its a shame it has died off now, to be replaced by the Camaro. They seemed to finally get it right at the end with the 2006 and 2007 SS models having a 303HP V8

yeah but at the price they were looking for they kinda botched it anyways... it was a mustang competitior at way more money... still theres lots of room for a LS swap into them which is always fun to think about...

In 04 and 05 you could get the Series II Supercharged 3800 in the Monte Carlo/Impala... The only reason its like that is cause in 04, the Grand Prix could get the Series III Supercharged 3800... Chevy models are usually 1 step below Pontiac.

The most sporting option was the Monte Carlo SS 454 package. It also included heavy-duty suspension, wider tires, "SS 454" badging, and an automatic load-leveling rear suspension. The Turbo-Hydramatic transmission (with a 3.31 rear axle) was a mandatory option with the SS package, although it still cost $222 extra. Weighing only a bit more than a comparably equipped Chevelle SS 454, the Monte Carlo SS was quite a fast car, although it accounted for less than 3% of Monte Carlos sold in 1970. I still think the IV gen SS Monte Carlos were the best looking thou.

I am confused...how is it that you think the Monte Carlo is a Mustang competitor? The last Monte's where front wheel drive two-door sedans.. since when is any sedan in the same league as the original pony car........I just want too know how you came upon that little fact of yours....

more of a comment aimed at the past. But still they compared the mustang to the mc after the cam died off. I have a magazine from 2003 where they put the ss up against the gt.

I finally bought a nice yellow Monte Carlo has black stripes I love its looks . But wished it had a v8 eng. it's fun to drive . I only wish I could get the solid centerline aluminum rims put on it . Does anybody know if you can apraxia like order them for the 2003 ss Monte Carlo
