The check engine light is an indication there is a problem. Get the codes pulled to give you a clue as to the problem. It is 19 years old. When was the last tune up, oil change, air and fuel filter change? It could be lots of things causing it to run poorly. After checking the computer for codes, pull the spark plugs and check the compression. The shaking is caused by one or more of the cylinders not firing correctly.

I changed the spark plug wires and wires in the spring. It does need an oil change. Some times when i try to start it and it almost starts but has a pop aound out the tail pipe when it dies sometimes. When u first start it when it is cold it sounds like it has an exhaust tick but once it warms up it goes away. It sounds like its coming from the manifold on the driver side. Could that make it run poorly?
