Can I just remove the little metal screen over the speakers or do I need to remove the door panel itself.

you have to remove the entire door panel but not to worry its really easy the entire panel just snaps on and depending on the type of speakers you are going to replace the old ones with you might have to drill mounting holes for the new speaker since the old one is encased in its own mounting clip system which cannot be removed and transfered to your new speaker or you might have to screw them into the door panel if they are designed to have their own mesh grill and you would need to remove the old grill hoped this helped
