there's probably running lights that come on with the head lights and the brake light which shares the same wire as the directional , loose sockets can cause problems and I've seen bulbs with tiny little contacts , bad parts (bulbs) are always a possibility , a multi tester would help to see whats getting power and what ain't , everything needs a ground also
