Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi there again.
96 Crown Vic LX p71. Devoted
owner.
Recently went to my kid's house
shut the car off with the
emergency lights on went back
out started the car and couldn't
get it out of park. After a few
times trial and error could get it
out of gear could get and get in
your back and forth back and
forth but couldn't figure what was
the issue. My son came up with
turning the kid eighth of a turn
therefore letting it going to
neutral starting it and then I could
resume my travels. Totally forgot
that while all this was going on I
had no brake lights so I'm still
stuck in that same situation
where I have to turn the key in
eighth return get it into neutral
then start it and then I can get it
into gears question is I still have
no brake lights so what is this
leading me to with a 90% chance
of resolution. Any assistance or
suggestions would be greatly
appreciated again.
Thank you,
a devout Crown Victoria owner

Note the diagram for brake switch. See the fuse that says hot all the time, check that fuse. That is voltage to brake switch. At the brake switch, that top colored wire, hot all the time, that bottom wire goes hot when you step on the brake, check both for voltage, use a test light. See the wire to shift interlock, voltage. Usually you can't shift it unless you step on the brake. What I posted should get you headed in the right direction. do some voltage testing. good luck
