02 ford e150 stalls and hesitates when given gas!
Asked by Jay Jan 14, 2014 at 06:51 PM about the 2002 Ford Econoline Cargo 3 Dr E-150 Cargo Van
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
So this has been a problem for a while getting worse as days go on. so the van starts
fine, has no error codes, no theft light on or blinking. When you give it more than 1/8 of
the pedal the van hesitates and jerks and backfires. if you give less than 1/8 of the
pedal it will accelerate with no hesitation. and just today when i got in it and put it in
reverse it died right away. i held the gas and i got it to go. but then it acted like it
usually does and was fine for the rest of my drive, except for the hesitation. i was
thinking it may be a fuel pump or filter but not sure. please help!!!!!!

throttle position sensor?

yes...a mechanical device which tells the computer where your foot is...some are accelerator position sensors...but Toyota got a bad rap as this device led to many out of control accidents...so the TPS is used...some cars have both...is mounted right on the throttle body and gets the signal from a transducer or a cable...hafta look it up...if it were a transducer the search would have shown that~....but think EVERY TIME you use the car that little tiny bearing will see some wear and crumbles will block the opticals makin' it unreliable...(this being the case here)~
replaced the throttle pos sensor and nothing changed

the intake air sensor has a small wire that changes the value under various temperatures....and like a lightblub may burn out leaving the circuit open~ I'd at least pluck that from the intake plenum and visually check the wire is still there...they are kinda cheap too~^^^^^
the link didnt work and i will check the wire to see if it still there on the intake air sensor

Gas tank debris. drop and clean out tank, change fuel pump screen and sock. Replace in line fuel filter on driver side chasis rail !!!!!!!!
We are having a very similar problem with ours. We have a 2000 Ford e250 cargo van, and it has a bad hesitation problem. It sounds like it chokes out when we drive it, especially when you push the pedal down hard. Our mechanic told us that it was a head gasket?? I’m thinking the line may be choked out or something. Any ideas??
I was told when it back fires thats usually the timing belt. And the the stalling on the gears on 1 2 or 3 usually means you have to change your transmission filter and flush old fluids out and put new fluids in. If theres any metal in the tranny pan you may have to consider your transmission is going out because your gears are grinding and slowly dissolving. Once a gear fully disolves it will stay stuck in a gear.
Im having the same problem. It's probably the mass air flow sensor.
Did you figure out what it was I’m having same issues ?
