Wheels Locking Up on Ford Escape
Asked by Kimberlyhope66 Nov 02, 2016 at 07:00 AM about the 2006 Ford Escape XLT AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My front wheels keep locking up, it
appears to mostly be the driver's side
wheel, but it is hard to tell. I check the
calipers and changed the brakes, and the
problem has not only persisted, but gotten
worse. The wheel bearings and hub have
been replaced recently as well. Do I have
faulty wheel bearings? Or is it something
else?

Did you also replace the brake hoses ?
Kimberlyhope66 answered 8 years ago
Yes, those have been replaced as well. I don't believe it to be a brake issue at all.

I wish it was a tone ring, I have replaced both of those as well :(

So the ABS light staying on or is it off ?
Kimberlyhope66 answered 8 years ago
The abs light is off. It went off when the tone rings were replaced.

When wheels lock up jack up front end and support and remove tires loosen caliper bleeder screw then try to turn hub if it spins freely check master cylinder or proportioning valve one of these maybe not working properly since you already changed calipers and brake hoses if still stays tight disconnect ABS connectors at the disconnect and see if that frees up and spins freely if so something is wrong with ABS system.
Bad master cylinder or air in system. Did fluid get low enough to allow air in the system?
I pulled out the ABS fuse on my 2005 Ford explorer the number five slot in the engine compartment fuse box in between the battery and the master cylinderit was a green 40 amp clear covered fuse that ran the ABS pump I believe. I pulled that fuse which disabled the ABS system but left the regular brakes working fine I have been to a shop yesterday they were going to charge me $508 to replace the hubs the bearings and the sensors all in one as it turns out the hub is bad on the front passenger side and I believe it did need a sensor their fix probably would have got me rolling but I can get those parts for 80 bucks all-in-one it includes wheel bearings attached to the hubs and sensors for both sides of the car.of course the shop didn't tell me that I could drive around if I just pulled the fuse and my front wheels were locking up at low speeds from takeoff to about 3 or 4 miles an hour once I got past that speed I could drive it around but you never knew when it was going to lock up again and it did quite often I couldn't believe how easy it was just to pull that fuses if you have trouble with your ABS system pull the fuse it'll get you home good luck.
Same exact problem. Replaced the pads, caliper, and rotor on both sides. Took it to a mechanic to have the bearings checked, but they were good. I have seen that this is a common problem, so how is this not a safety recall?
How about bad ABS module?
