Check your Shift Control Module I believe that's what it is called but it mounts on the outside the transmission and the shift cable goes to it.
Write down the VIN, get the basic powertrain parts in use in your vehicle known to you. Go to the public library, look yours up. Use an automotive database or ask the librarian to help you. Read the service bulletins about what is failing in those and what the repairs, updates and recalls are for your symptom. Verify this information applies to your vehicle and its vin and information. perform the inspections to verify the parts needed or whether the campaigns, recalls, or bulletins have been used to regularly service yours. Make sure your shift cabloe is installed and adjusted coorectly, verify the presence of an added safety strap to ensure this. Inspect the fluid level, compare findings to your service records. It should be mentioned that this is all done by a trained service tech when you ask for it at your Ford dealer. Start by calling, asking for Ford service, speak to a service advisor. Mention your concerns and offer your Vin. They employ people to answer your questions effectively and expeditiously. There are so many parts and ways a trans can mess up, or get messed up. The system prechecks may solve it, the service steps may solve it, or the diagnostics of the transmission man may be required.
Guesses lead to replacement of unnecessary expensive parts. Do the low cost steps and dont guess before you start slinging electronic parts around. misadjustment, or sensor failure or even automotive computer updates may correct shift issues. It could also be well worn and need an overhaul. we do not know the mileage, but the years suggest over 100,000. Trans controls, sensors and modules are not to be tampered with by the layman, you would do so at your own risk and expense. Buying extended coverage, or mechanical breakdown insurance comes highly recommended..

When we give recommendations or suggestions on the problems that we try or best to answer short of not being there we are not telling them this is definitely the problem and replace this part of course go get a diagnosis first before buying.
I agree, and the steps are simple, or you can request free information from the library that your taxes already paid for. A few minutes to familiarize yourself with their info systems can empower you, help you find your actual answers by reading the published answers.
If you cannot make heads or tails of the language, dont play, ask your dealer service, they have info no one else has yet, as well as repeated experience with the same part, or the same tests leading to a few possibilities. Without research ? dumb. That's why they seem smart. But they can actually save you time and money.

So what you are saying there is really no need for this forum just go ask your dealer or go to the library for answers.
Part of what they are saying is "we don't have a crystal ball". It is difficult if not impossible to troubleshoot some problems without being able to look at the vehicle. Other problems are more obvious or someone has had the same problem. All of us can only give an educated guess. Sometimes, going to the dealer is the least expensive way to get things fixed when you don't know what you are doing.
Nice, Thanks Ol T37, you can take ideas from all sources and make your own decision. You can pick what comes easy, or you may learn you have those to look into. Since a trans is going to be very expensive, and usually the asker still has all the data we need. And a vehicle thats proplerly cared for has a service file at its dealer, all this info we share and u share is helpful, it's not a sixgun.
I had these $80K coaches that exhibited shift hunting, felt like it selected wrong gear when they wanted to, without an NGS record feature the "noisy" reading would never have been found. Guys would be ordering sensors, modules, transmissions, harnesses etc and made all those coaches miss a summer trip, or worse. the pid on the tester can be selected and the shift inputs can be read as live datastream. Then you check to see if the proving grounds has generated a tsb or procedure before ordering parts. all that info is around years after to sort through as clues after it's out of warranty and kept in auto databases, saves time and money, you need all the vehicle's particulars when it has lived as this one had, then your tech can help best with your reality.
