Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,
I have a 2002 ford explorer 6 cyl with roughly 135k on it. It's always ran great for me. However, I was driving today, it's a very rainy day, and I was doing about 45 or so when all of a sudden I saw my check engine light come on. I looked down and my tac was on 0. I rolled to a stop, put hazzards on, put it in park and tried to restart. The engine cranked and cranked and cranked (brand new interstate battery) but nothing. She would not start. I waited a few and tried again in case I flooded. Still would not not start. I popped the hood and played around with the power distribution box and started pushing down on the relays and fuses. Got back in and tried to start again. It started. I pulled forward and it died again. I got back out and played with the fuses and relays again. She started again. I was able to drive home this time.  Im not sure what is causing this but could it be a relay or fuse in this power distribution box? The engine was cranking perfectly but just not kicking over.  What could I check? I know how to see if a fuse is dead but have no clue how to tell if a relay is bad. Not sure which to check either. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I really need to try to fix this myself as money is very tight lately.

Your not going to believe it,but the same thing happened to me today ! Seems to be a common thing on the 99-03. http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion-t11903_ds525249 i got some good answers here. Mine is a 2001 Sport Trac same engine, with 132 K miles. I just let it sit for a bit, started right up and drove home about 20 miles with out a hiccup ! hope you get it fixed, good luck !

rest the rollover valve (passenger side under front carpet) red button on top.the valve goes bad and shuts off the fuel to the engine.

My 2002 explorer shut down on me one day while making a stop at a stop sign. When I turned it back on it started blowing white smoke from the exhaust. But before that when I tried to accelerate, it sounded like there was an air leak of some sort. And it smelled like gas when I tried to turn it back on.

my 2002 explorer quit on me today while driving in the rain. Today was heavy rain and it cranked after stalling twice. I was able to make it home and my rpm went to zero. I have 156,000 miles on it. Got it home revved it up and rpm is at one. weird this has never happened before.

I was driving my 2004 sport trac xlt PRM 4x4 doing 70 miles and no lights came on it just quit. I got off the road tried to start it up, it made like a humming sound but there was no engine crank. I looked at the coolant and it was empty. I did not check the radiator and my boyfriend added more coolant to the reservoir, tried to start it 3 times and was just making a humming like sound, came back the next day and still wouldn’t start. Got it towed and was told my engine was blown. Do you think driving fast like 70-75 miles or no coolant in reservoir made the engine blow, also I should add no indicator lights came on when my car just quit. What do you think made my engine blow.
