Head gasket
I recently got a 2002 Ford Explorer as a gift
but there is a problem with the engine. My
grandmother gave me the car because she
bought a new one and she told me the
coolant is mixing with the oil. I just want to
know if that means it really is the engine
and if I would be better off fixing it or just
getting a whole new motor
Engine will likely have to come out to repair the head gaskets. How many miles on this Explorer?

I would suspect the mileage to be up around 100K, based on age. The problem with the 4.0 - 6 cylinder engine of those years, is the cam guides and tensioners tend to go out. It's going to happen. Check the price to have the head gaskets changed and compare it to the price of a re manufactured engine, not a rebuilt engine. If the engine has to come out to service the heads, then you are paying for that labor anyway. The difference in price may be worth the benefit.
