Can a mechanic OTHER than a Ford Dealership replace a PCM?

Good question! I will ask this when I call them this morning. I just got this terminal "diagnosis" at the end of business yesterday. He told me that Ford no longer makes computers for this year vehicle so they would need to find one after market. Years ago my daughter let one of her friends install those fancy lights. The lights are long gone but the radio, door locks, dimmer switch and dash lights have never been the same.
I asked about the diagnostics used to determine the demise of the PCM. I found another mechanic trusted by several family members who can do it for approximately $650. I think this the route we will go for now. Thank you both for your input!
Whoever you give the vehicle to, make sure you check and make certain they can program the replacement. There are probably several updates to your PCM since it was installed.
