so she put a brand new thermostat in it the fan works she said that sometimes
it would run for 3 to 5 days without overheating then one day it overheats and
it keeps doing it does anybody know what this might be

The PT Cruiser is built on the Dodge Neon chassis/platform and both of these cars are known for three things, blown head gaskets, Coolant Systems Issues, and WEAK trannys. I am going to guess if the thermostat was correctly replaced its either the head gasket or a bad radiator. Get it into a shop and stop driving it before the heat kills the engine. Best of luck.
