Brake lights not working

Asked by vXv_Cobra_vXv Feb 13, 2022 at 07:12 PM about the 1994 GMC Sierra 1500 C1500 Special Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok I have replaced the brake switch (on the pedal) as well as the relay (drivers side firewall under the hood) and I still end up with one hot wire at the switch and no power to the fuse (dash panel at drivers left knee). If I put power via a jumper wire to the one side of the fuse, I can hear a relay or something clicking under the dash on the passenger side of the cab but still no brake lights... help please!!!

Sounds like a broken wire. Check the connector’s wires, it could be broken internally.

You need a multi tester and electrical knowledge to see what has power ground and what don't . I think the brake light runs through the directional switch , if they share a bulb in the back .

I feel stupid after figuring out what the problem was: All of my troubleshooting was done with the ignition off (since brake lights don't need the key on to work) and working by myself I checked functionality by looking for the light to reflect off of the wall i was backed up to (I could see the light reflect when I turned on the Hazard lights so knew the bulbs/bed wiring was good). Long story short, I had accidentally set the left turn signal on... which with the hazard lights on changes nothing (but with the key off it prevents the left brake light from working...) Once I started the truck and everything worked properly.
