Need help diagnosing problem

2000 chevy silverado LS 1500series 4wd z-71 5.3l
I cannot operate in 2wd.  I start the truck, and none of the gears will
engage. I hear Popping, clanking, noises shifting out of Park in all the gears
and the truck will not move in any direction.
I am able to operate in 4wd however without any problems.

When you operate it in 4x4 is just the front tires that are getting power sent to them? Or the rear ones also. I'm thinking it is something inside your rear diff

I was driving on a highway about 70mph and it felt like I went from Drive to neutral. I tried the lower gears and they didn't work either and finally rolled to a stop. After 10 minutes or so it finally engaged in Drive and I was able to get home. I have used 4wd a few times since then but not 2wd.
