can I sell my car with a timing chain problem?

Asked by yuqiliu Mar 02, 2015 at 06:58 PM about the 2005 Audi A6 3.2 quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Audi A6. it has approximately 130000 miles. last week, the engine was
making a DADADADA sound. so I drove to the dealer, and they told me it was the
timing chain and the estimate cost of fixing it is about $5000. That number shocked me.
i want to trade-in this car while getting another car. But i'm not very sure whether this is
a serious problem or not that the dealer will cut the price off to a very low amount......

the car is still drivable, and sound is not that big. But that dealer told me the engine
might die someday if the timing chain breaks.

Anyone has any experience before?

A defective timing chain is a big deal and 5,000.00 seems like allot of money for a new one installed. I'm sure the dealer will hear the noise when you try to use it as a trade in. I would take the car to several local mechanics, dealers prices are always high. Good luck....

That price is exorbitant. Take it to a real mechanic and tell the dealer to go to hades. Although that said, it is an Audi so your prices for such work will stray higher.

That price is absolutely crazy. Take it to several local mechanics for estimates. Buy the kit yourself first at autozone or something. Only oem parts though.

I have 208,000 on my Audi A6 3.2 with original everything. I have heard of some timing chain issues, (tensioners, etc). Most of this is a wear item and is not that expensive to address. However, the timing chain is on the back of these motors making it more difficult to work on.

Oil change frequency has a big bearing on timing chain life in my experience.
