1996 GMC 4 wheel drive

Asked by DWB57 Nov 01, 2016 at 04:28 PM about the 1996 GMC Sierra 2500 2 Dr K2500 SL 4WD Extended Cab LB HD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1996 GMC k2500 won't shift into 4 wheel drive. When i push the 4hi
button the light just blinks and it won't engage the front tires. Checked the
voltage at the transfer case encoder switch and it had approx. 5 volts and
the ground had less than 2 ohms resistance so i am pretty sure that the 4
wheel drive switch and "brain" unit inside the truck are working ok. Checked
the voltage at the front diff actuator and found there was none. Does this
mean that the transfer case encoder motor needs to be replaced? Thanks
for any help on this.

I figured this out myself. Bought the transfer case switch thinking that was the problem but it wasn't , the old one was ok. What i should have done first was to check the fuse inside the cab on the drivers side( 25 amp fuse was blown). I put a new fuse in and tried to switch it into 4hi and the fuse immediately blew again. We traced the problem to the front diff actuator - it was shot. Bought a new one and installed, replaced the 25 amp fuse again and everything worked ok after that. Point is CHECK YOUR FUSES. Lesson learned.
