The causes should be stored in the memory, but even if they are not, a good close inspection of all the items in that black box where the valve and solenoid are should show a lot of dirt crud and debris. There is also a filter in there. Your problem could be caused be either the valve or the solenoid and can also be caused by both as it was in my 2001. The purge control valve should have been checked by the mechanic while he had it apart, and they tend to leak and cause the hard starting problem.
