Can I put a newer 4.0L engine in my 1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo?

Asked by couldabin Oct 11, 2010 at 11:22 AM about the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo (automatic) has 261K miles on it, and just lost all
compression on the No. 3 cylinder. I suspect a failed lifter. I'm considering getting
a used engine and am wondering if the 4.0L from a newer Grand Cherokee can be
substituted. If so, how new an engine can I put in?

Thanks.

its possible, but not worth it. the ecus, would be different, and it may not bolt up right in the engine compartment. your best bet is to take it in and get it fixed. much cheaper, much less of a headache. but make sure to get more than just one opinion before servicing.

Most 4.0L engines will bolt up using your existing engine harness and ECU. One of the few differences year to year will be motor mounts or something else minor (within reason). Also, if you lost compression in Cyl# 3 it is most likely a warped head or warped deck. Odds are a used/reman engine is your best bet. The Mopar 4.0 Liter is a very resilient engine, and as long as everything is in reasonable shape, and engine swap is a reasonable alternative to a new car.

The early 4.0 has a lot more torque than the newer ones and run almost forever. The intake gasket is the only problem that I know that killed them.

i have a 02 Grand jeep cherokee laredo 4.0,and it has a bad lifter and they said also my cylinders are bad,so im needing to know if a 95 motor will fit my jeep
