Power Windows/Locks etc not working!
Asked by Jonathan Apr 22, 2017 at 03:41 PM about the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My locks/windows/AC/temperature guage
wee not working. I checked the boot in
between the driver door and the cab and
found a 10g black ground wire in half. It
was being held on by the outer insulated
layer. I cut about 1 inch back on both
ends, added a small (about 3 inches long)
extra 10g ground wire to both ends.
Twisted the ends together and capped
them. Electrical taped the caps to the
wires so it doesn't cause anymore issues.
Disconnected the battery for 20 minutes.
Reconnected the battery and everything
worked perfectly again. I also checked the
passenger door for any wire issues just to
be safe. Lord only knows I couldn't deal
with no AC or power windows in the hot
weather again.

Had that problem on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cheroke. Also the inside light wouldn't go out and killed the battery. It was the broken wire in the boot between the drivers door and the body. It is a comon problem with Jeeps. I heard one dealer wanted $1000 to fix the problem. It is that wire you mentioned.
Yeah the black wire was completely torn in half. I just added a small section and capped it off. At first it didn't fix the problem then I disconnected the battery for 20 min. Then everything worked perfectly again.
how do you get the boot off
I just had the same problem with the windows/side view mirrors not working and the inside dome lights staying on. I went to my mechanic and he was able to turn off the dome lights however he said he would have to keep my Jeep for at least a day to figure it out and he said it may cost more than $1,000.00 to fix it. I just fixed the issue thanks to you for under $5.00!!! There was a slice in the boot on the door so I could access the wires and just put a Butt Splice Electrical Wire Connector on it...didn't even need any extra wire. I put some auto electrical tape on it to make sure it doesn't move...and so far so good!! Thank you so much for the help!!!
2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee same problems not working and the exact same issue broken black wire in the boot between door and body. Soldered the wires back together and now waiting to re connect battery. Thank you very much Jonathan!
Have a 2008 grand Cherokee the front windows and door locks stop working the tailgate won’t open and my gauges on the dash stop working. But my back windows work fine the truck runs fine what could be the problem ?
I had same problem on 2004 WG grand Cherokee CRD. Snapped on front passenger side, again under plastic boot. Bit fiddly but able to slide the boot back and use wire connector with screws as a quick fix in tight spot. Didn't need to splice in new wire section to join. Hope this also helps others. What a nightmare without these answers
Would the driver side relay in the motor control all of the windows
I'm having the same problem. I pushed the black boot between the door jam back and found the power wire broke (orange w/black tracer)fixed it but it st up lol is not working. I did the battery thing for 30 min also. Still nothing. I'm losing my mind here.
My 2004Jeep Grand Cherokee driver door locks and all windows stopped working. I found the black 10/12 gage wire and a yellow 18 gage wire broken in two within the driver side black boot covering the harness into the car body. I stripped and butt spliced both wires. Locks and all windows now work again. 5-10 minute job. Thanks for the heads up. I just used a pair of needle nose plyers and a flat head screwdriver to pull the black boot off the door frame to expose the wiring harness.
Do I need to disconnect the battery to do this? My lights were on inside but they went out as I was coming home from work tonight. I was planning on working on it tomorrow, do I need to disconnect the battery?
Hi guys daughters jeep just did same thing , you guys solved it thanks !! 5 min work and all working !!
Correct fix, but it's not 10 gauge wire. 8 or 6.
95 Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2 had no windows working, looked at drivers door and spliced split black wire together and the 2 drivers windows work! The passengers will not move from either control? Check all fuses. Do you think it’s the switches on just the right side? Or maybe a fuse in the engine box?
the same thing just happened to my jeep. did you bring this to a mechanic? i dont know if i trust myself to do this myself but am not looking to invest much more into my 2004... any quick fixes or "bandaids"
prayed back rubber boot from door side, and clear as day black 10g wire was broken. Spliced it and repaired and had total job completed in 20 minutes. Thank you to all for your help. Was not happy thinking that I could have an electrical issue. Love working on cars till it comes to wiring. Again Thank You.
i am not gonna lie, when i read about this black wire broken in half-i was so skeptical i really didn't believe it until i went check it out and damm! there it was.i peeled each end back a 1/4 inch and used a barrel crimp and problem solved. my windows.locks and my red light alarm all works now. no more problem . thanks everyone!

Found the notorious broken wire in the driver door boot in my 2004 grand Cherokee. Stripped end that goes back into the cab and spliced in another 10g wire about 8” long that’s a little more flexible, pulled it though the boot, and soldered the other end to the wire on the door end. Been dealing with this for a couple of years and never knew what it was, because the windows and A/C worked okay- ish when the door was closed. This morning after work everything quit, and I found this thread. 10 mins worth of work and it’s just like the day I bought it almost 8 years ago.
no black wire thru drivers door no air no windows have locks????????????

GuruHMCNV, Black wire needs to be there. Should see broken piece on harness going into door. Take trim piece off where hood release is, should be able to find other end of black wire from there with the rest of the wire harness that goes to driver door.
2004 Jeep GC Limited- Same problems, Dome lights stay on, no FOB operation, no windows other than Driver's side, only Driver's electric lock works. Found driver's side Black wire broken, blue broken, orange broken, yellow broken and one more- spliced all, tried leaving battery disconnected a couple of times for about 30 min, still no change after repairs. I have yet to check the passenger door under the boot, but getting discouraged.
Okay to add to my previous comments, After repairing wiring to Driver's door harness, there was no change and the FOB's still did not work. From another site comments, I did open the wiring harness to the Passenger Front Door, and there I also found the BLACK wire was broken. I'd already repaired 5 wires on the Driver's Door, but only 1 wire broken on Passenger Front door- and YES, I repaired the BLACK wire there ALSO, and BINGO- Everything started working again- I put in a Loop of Flexible wire so hopefully it prevents the severe bending these wires get and I can go another 170K miles without issues.
What is this infamous black wire? Is it a power supply or ground?
GrizzlyG71 answered 5 years ago
Guru1S3MX Black is generally considered hot or live.
Checked the black in my 2004 grand Cherokee with meter. It's def ground!
WindnWater answered 5 years ago
I could not find any issues with the wires through the door. Removed the door panel and tested the plug end, I have ground at the black. Could the drivers side window controller itself be bad? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

WindnWater, Check passenger side as well.
THAT TIP WAS GOLD!! Thank you!! Saved me a world of headache and money. I would never have found that. Black wire in the boot snapped/worn in half inside the driver's side door boot. Put a blue butt end crimp connector to connect the broken ends and disconnected the battery (after trying it without disconnecting and having it not work...). Reconnected the battery after 10 minutes, all working perfect again. Thanks again!!!
What is this boot everyone speaks of?? Welp!
THANK YOU !!!! Xtina the boot is the rubberish piece that goes around wired . u can cut it in half or pop it free from door or body with a screw driver

Always disconnect the battery before ANY electrical work, if you take a short cut & don’t do this you’ll be looking for shorts because you blew a fuse, & if you blow one fuse it could make it hell trying to find several shorts,, just do the correct thing & play it safe, disconnect the battery & when you do touch both cables together, it resets the ECM (computer) & EVERYTHING will run like day one,, best mechanic trick on the planet!!!
My drivers black wire was broken in two and repaired it found a wire on steering column almost severed in half fixed it because seems I have no communication to my gauges OBD2 port and no key light on when ground was fixed battery was unhooked and after 30 min I rebooked battery and licks started dancing around car from passenger door to hatch and back to pass door again and didnt fix gauge problem OBD2 problem or no key light did self test took neg terminal off and PCM battery fuse out for 5 min then put PCM fuse back and neg back on and went and held C/T and reset buttons on overhead console and turned switch to on not start and released them it said program info then J1850 failed communication on self test and car ran once with fully charged battery after starting and shutting itself off after a few seconds all week with solid no key light on tried a second start to run directly after it started and was running first time and started but shuts off again all fuses to ignition internally have been replaced and replaced external fuse to ignition as well checking pass side door boot tomorrow but even when it ran today gauges still remained dead OBD 2 still has no power and no key still on help!!!
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo: Power Door Lock Switches, and Power Window Switches stop working when I open my door, a little investigating and pulled the rubber boot back on the wire harness into the door and found a broken wire hanging on by a thread of the wire sleeve allowing it to make contact when the door closes, and disconnect when the door is opened. Easy Fix for a 10 Gage wire, clipped it and pulled the other end through the cab, crimped and heat shrinked a new wire in place about 8” long for more flexibility back through the cab to the other end.
Just curious I found broken ground cable in passenger side door reconnected it with crimps and checked both harnesses with meter which are reading good. But still no power to the windows, I'm seeing people post about this battery trick what's the right way to go about it
I LOVE you guys!! 2004 grand Cherokee limited, driver's door controls only intermittently working when the door was shut. I peeled back the rubber wire guard between the door and the body and sure enough the black going wire was cracked! Everything works great now that I ran a new wire. Thank you!!
Dude thank you! Srt8 2012 lost everything but back windows.... 2 cut wires. 5 minute fix. I did buy a new module 2 weeks ago but I had a window button broken so I needed it. Thank you to everybody....smoke one for me

I found 2 broken wires in passenger door harness (black & orange) I believe... repaired them but still no power to any windows, door locks, or power mirrors..I have not tried disconnecting the battery for 20-30 minutes yet.. No other wires found damaged anywhere else.. hopefully battery disconnecting will work..I'll give it a try
06 grand Cherokee. My drivers window only works but when I roll it down it stops and I have to keep clicking it to go down. All the other windows also don’t work. Fuses, and circuit breakers are good. Could it be the ground?
Thank you so much! I fixed the wire disconnected the battery for 20 minutes reconnected and Bam! It works! Thank you!
Thank you sir. You literally just saved my day from being ruined.
Hello, the black wire was totally torn and I reconnected it. it worked for like 5 minutes and now the problem is back. I checked all the wires and everything is good. The weird thing is that whenever I disconnected the battery everything goes back to normal and then after 5 minutes it stops working. any ideas?

Be careful touching the Pos and Neg Together it could wipeout your ECM AND TCM Data ..It could also short out your BCM ..It is not the best Idea i ever heard ..What that does s put the car in Default Mode..It could wipeout Countless Modems and Modules ..If this should happen you will have to have the Car Towed to the Dealer and EVERYTHING Reprogramed $$$$$$ ...You can Accomplish the same thing by Clearing the Car with a SNAP ON OBD Computer Its your car and your Choice ..I would NEVER do anything that would Jeopardize my Data in my Car ..It could also Deprogram your Keys ...
Alrighty fellas. Little late on this forum... Anyways, my power windows and door locks stopped working on my passenger side. My interior lights stayed on and my key FOB stopped working. The only power door lock that worked was my drivers door. I opened the passenger door and pulled back the boot and boom. Black ground wire in half. Spliced the wire and nothing worked. Disconnected battery for 20 minutes, nothing. Then all of a sudden last night, my drivers side windows stopped working too. And my outside temp sensor. What the heck man. Pulled back the boot on drivers side but all of the wires appear just fine. Did I blow a fuse? Do I just need to look harder at the wires? Why didn't splicing the wire fix my problem and why is it getting worse?
Also my drivers side windows are down and it might rain next week soooooo help ASAP
Well, I done fixed it. It ended up being that my ground wire to passenger door splice was sloppy. Redid that one and found a slight break in the positive orange and white wire to drivers door. Spliced that one and we are golden. It's a jeep thing I didn't quite understand.
