Check engine light

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Check engine light came on. I've gotten it read. Changed
the gas cap because it never clicked, I know it may be
something else but do the check engine lights turn off on
their own or do I have to have it cleared to see if it fixed it?
They never cleared it when I got it read so it has stayed on.

Faults codes will clear on their own but it is faster if u clear them manually

Do you know about how long? If I'm past the time frame of it going off I want to move to the next step.

It dwpends on the fault, some faults require so many key cycles before they clear
an EVAP system fault such as a leaky gas cap will take a few drive cycles and it might help if you drive with half to 3/4 full tank
