So out of no where, I'm driving ( hwy) and my check engine light comes on and I get the
msg check gauges and the temp gauge immediately dropped right to cold, but yet I am

its most likely a malfunctioned coolant temp sensor, or faulty wire to coolant temp sensor.
No I did not get it scanned, my question is if it is a sensor is that a big deal or dangerous? Money is tight so how long can I leave this before its an issue...or is it even something expensive...sorry I'm very car repair illiterate
These forums are good and bad since even with the best of intentions, we're all guessing at what's going on. I would recommend getting it diagnosed by a trusted automotive shop to make sure there is nothing else going on that will cost you more since money is tight. Most likely, the causes of what you describe shouldn't be too expensive?
Some of us on this site can give you better advise once you have the diagnosis on whether this is something you can wait on.
