Why does my car die while driving only intermittendently

Asked by elhiam May 30, 2013 at 10:29 AM about the 1995 Lincoln Town Car Cartier

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1995 Lincoln TC Cartier has 173,000 miles and runs perfect except intermittendently  it dies on me while driving.  Im usually going 20-30mph and it just dies.  After waiting about 1-2 minutes it starts again.  The engine always turns over but it takes a bit to get started.  I also put engine cleaner in my gasoline, changed the fuel pump and fuel filter to no avail.  It still stops on me when I least  expect it.  What could be causing it?  My friend said the same thing happened to him and it was the 02 sensor but my car has several 02 sensors.   He said it took 6 months to diagnose his problem and my car is already taking 3 months because it only happens about every 6 weeks on my car.  Please help?

Inspect your air intake tube from the air cleaner to the throttle body. Is it loose or are there cracks or holes? Take a look at the PCV system too. Sounds a little like and unmetered air problem. Go read the codes and address them if there are any. Do the simple stuff first. For the cost of the fuel pump alone, you could have had it checked out by a professional all ready. BTW - O2 sensors cannot cause this concern.

Aubrey, my issue was i needed a new altenator, and now after a week my car died again but its because my system is draining too much power than it is being charged. Also my ground cable connecting to the batter is loose n old. I replaced the positive connector to and it resolved the issue for 6 months, but after fixing my system and now it uses double wattage i need a capacitor for my amp system.

I had the same, intermittent stalling & then wait for restart. After replacing the fuel pump and filter (no trash came out of the filter) and still the same problem, found the rubber inner hose in the fuel line coming out of the tank to the filter came apart and would block fuel & then later allow it.

I've seen this when one of the breakers under hood goes bad. The car would randomly die, coast to the side of the road, and would always restart after a moment. The breakers are located on the driver's side at the rear of the engine compartment. Can't remember what they cost but not too bad. Solved the problem.

I have a 2006 Lincoln Town car signature with over 300,000 miles and it was a 1 owner and it drives like a good dream. BUT! When I drive it will shut off rather I'm on the freeway or getting ready to take off it just cutts off. The codes said throttle unit is bad so I changed the whole assembly including sensors. 4 days later at the signal light it shut off again. What could be the problem???

Replace the three breakers under the hood, on the driver's side, back near the firewall. On mine they are side by side and are identical. They have a history of getting hot and breaking contact. They are cheap, so replace all three. Good luck.

The Lincoln has three breakers side by side under the hood on the driver's side, and located back near the firewall. One of these gets hot and breaks the circuit. After a couple minutes it cools and again makes contact, so the car will start and operate normally until the breaker trips again. Recommend you replace all three. They are pretty cheap as I recall. Both I and a friend had this problem and replacing the breakers solved the problem. Good luck. Hope this helps.

GuruYX89, is this the same location for a 1997? There are 3 relays on the passenger side beside the battery. Is this same thing or different? Thanks

A picture of these and calling it a breaker, seriously is not it's official name when I need to research the part? This is currently what is going on with my 97 Lincoln Mark VIII. The post i'm referring to: The Lincoln has three breakers side by side under the hood on the driver's side, and located back near the firewall. One of these gets hot and breaks the circuit. I just purchased a 1994 TC with 140k. Registered yesterday and it cut off 3 times yesterday. Has anyone replaced the eec power relays themselves. I can't afford to take it in

Car cutting off while going down the road but can clutch it and fires right back up but then it got to doing it more often till it just quit starting. It turned out it was the cylinoid switch. I replaced it and never no more problem
