Speedometer and miles to empty not right

"Miles to empty" is a feature that calculates how far the car will go with the gasoline left in the tank, based on the most recent mpg. So if you just filled up that 25 gallon tank and your most recent gas mileage was 21 mpg, then you can go about 525 miles before you run out of gas. Also, the speedometer reads "mph", the odometer reads "miles driven", and then we have "miles to empty". It's right on.
My bad for wording the problem incorrectly. So, when I first purchased the car after a fill up it would read between 290 and 300 miles to empty. Now its saying 500 plus after a fill up. In addition, when that started (around a week and a half ago) the speedometer would go to zero . That's while on the highway going 65 to 75 mph. It would show actual speed and then show 0 for mabe 8 or 9 seconds.
Oh, and the trunk ajar keeps popping on also. All this just started happening at the same time.

Since "miles per hour" and "miles until empty" rely on the same input (distance/speed) and they are malfunctioning together, I am thinking a speed sensor is at fault. There is usually a speed sensor on the tail shaft of the transmission. Check for lose wire or replace it. I'm not sure this would show a fault code but scan anyway if the part is expensive. Not sure about the trunk indicator.
Thanks!!! I'll check it out.
Hey man not sure if you're going to see this, but I drive a 97 town car as well and this exact thing started happening last night. Speedometer momentarily displaying 0 mph while on the highway, filled up my tank after work and it says 524 miles. Do you remember exactly what the problem was?
