Elecric motor noise in the engine compartment

Asked by Elise_2742 Mar 07, 2017 at 11:50 PM about the 2000 Lincoln Town Car Cartier L

Question type: General

Many times when we start our car there is an electrical motor noise in the
front left side under a filter box. It does not do it every time but sometimes
seems to speed up the engine until it quits.

Is this noise in the engine compartment or passenger cabin? I'm going to assume engine compartment, and the filter box you refer to is the air filter. The source of the noise may be the idle air control. It can cause a bad idle or engine to die when not pressing the accelerator. Another source may be a cooling fan, but that's hard not to notice.

If the compressor cycles fairly frequently you have a slow air leak. Get a spray bottle with a soap and water mix and spray the lines from the compressor to the air springs. I have a very low mileage 1999 Carter (110,000) that was cycling. Found a slow leak at the line where it joins the compressor...cut about 1/4 " off and reattached...no more leak.
